AI communications by the numbers

Five published statistics explain why an AI communications strategy needs human judgment: buyers use AI, communicators use AI, narratives move faster, and AI amplifies whatever judgment already exists.

Last updated: November 2026

How many people use AI in communications and buying decisions?

Most of them. A 2026 Avaans Media roundup reports that 76% of PR professionals use generative AI, and Shadow cites a University of Toronto 2025 finding that 73% of B2B buyers use AI tools in research. The Judgment Brief, published by Beltway Media, collects these figures here with their sources.

What the numbers mean together

Read side by side, these figures describe a market where nearly everyone has the same tools. If most buyers research with AI and most communicators produce with it, access to AI is no longer an advantage. The narrative cycle data adds urgency: stories take hold and fade faster, leaving less time to correct a weak position.

The Harvard Business School finding is the most important for strategy. An AI assistant helped people who were already doing well and hurt those who were not. In The Judgment Brief's reading, that is evidence that AI multiplies existing judgment rather than replacing it, which is the core argument of our guide to human judgment in AI communications.

What these numbers do not say

None of these studies measured Beltway Media's work or any specific firm's results. The narrative cycle figure covers the PR technology category specifically, and the Harvard Business School result comes from research on entrepreneurs, not communications teams. We present each number in its original context and encourage readers to follow the links.

This page is part of our guide to AI communications strategy, which explains how organizations can use AI for scale while keeping human judgment in charge of what they say.

Common questions

Why does my organization need an AI communications strategy?

Your buyers and your peers already use AI. Shadow cites a University of Toronto 2025 finding that 73% of B2B buyers use AI tools in research, and Avaans Media reports that 76% of PR professionals use generative AI. Without a strategy, AI tools and AI search decide how your organization sounds and how it is described.

How does AI change crisis communications?

AI shortens the time an organization has to shape its story and summarizes whatever already exists about it. Shadow reports that dominant narratives in the PR technology category now compress from 18 to 24 month cycles to 9 to 12 months. Preparation therefore matters more than reaction: clear positions and verified facts need to exist before a crisis.

Can AI replace a communications team?

No. AI can replace some routine production, such as first drafts, repurposing, and formatting, but it cannot own a point of view or answer for one. Beltway Media's view is that automation reduces the value of purely technical skills while raising the value of senior judgment: choosing positions, setting standards, and deciding what not to publish.

How do AI search tools decide which brands to recommend?

No AI search provider publishes a full formula. Beltway Media's analysis, which it calls the AI credibility inversion, finds that AI discovery tends to favor third-party credibility signals such as earned media and independent citations over brand-controlled content. Clear, structured product facts and citable data also help AI systems evaluate and compare companies.

How do you measure trust in communications?

Pair activity metrics with signals of trust. Useful signals include the quality of earned media, third-party citations, how AI tools describe you, branded search interest, and whether buyers can explain why they chose you. Beltway Media's analysis warns that engagement, reach, and attributed leads can rise while brand trust declines.
